The Directorate of Regional and International Political Affairs (RIPA) comprises Departments of:
- Regional Peace and Security;
- International Political Cooperation; and
- International Law and Social Affairs.
The key functions of RIPA are:
- Providing technical advice on foreign policy development and its implementation in relation to matters of regional and international peace and security; and international law and social issues.
- Providing technical support to relevant MDAs and Official Delegations to regional and international conferences on matters of regional and international peace and security; and international law and social issues.
- Coordinating aspects of Missions related to regional and international peace and security; and international law and social issues.
- Promoting partnerships and networks with stakeholders dealing with matters of regional and international peace and security; and international law and social issues.
- Initiating and implementing strategies for enhancing the capacity of the Ministry in effectively dealing with matters related to regional and international peace and security; and international law and social issues.
- Ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the use of resources for the Directorate.
- Lobby positions for placement of Uganda or Ugandans in regional and international political organisations

The Directorate of Regional and International Economic Affairs comprises the Departments of:
- Regional Economic Cooperation.
- International Economic Cooperation.
- Diaspora.
The functions of the RIEA include:
- Promoting economic / commercial diplomacy (i.e. promoting trade and tourism; attracting investment; facilitating transfer of technology; facilitating mobilisation of resources from abroad for development);
- Mobilising Ugandan Diaspora for national development).
- Providing technical advice on foreign policy development and its implementation in relation to regional and international economic issues.
- Providing technical support to relevant MDAs / Official Delegations to regional and international conferences on regional and international economic issues.
- Promoting partnerships and networks with stakeholders dealing with matters of regional and international economic issues.
- Initiating and implementing strategies for enhancing the capacity of the Ministry in effectively dealing with matters related to regional and international economic issues.
- Ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in the use of resources for the Directorate.
- Lobbying positions for placement of Uganda or Ugandans in regional and international political organisations.
- Promoting South-South cooperation to diversify markets abroad and target FDI, development resources, technology transfer and trade facilities offered by the emerging economies, like the BRICS, ASEAN etc.
