Minister Oryem Celebrates Women in The Foreign Service

Today afternoon, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs in charge of International Cooperation Honorable Henry Okello ORYEM hosted the Women working in the Foreign Service to a luncheon at the Ministry Headquarters in Kampala.

This was on the occasion to mark the International Women's Day (IWD) under the theme; "Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid -19 world" . 

Hon Oryem said that the progress so far made towards Gender Equality and Women Empowerment has been affected by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that nonetheless, Ugandan Women have been at the forefront of the battle launched against the pandemic as essential workers 

The Minister underscored the role played by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in lobbying for the election of Ugandan Women into the international system such as Justice Julia Ssebutinde who was recently elected for a second term to the International Court of Justice and Justice Solome Balungi Bbosa to the International Criminal Court.

Hon. Oryem further highlighted the Ministry's efforts in promotion of Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women by effecting appointments to the different levels in the Foreign Service.

The Minister also appreciated the efforts of the female High Commissioners and Ambassadors serving in Uganda's Missions abroad promoting Uganda's Interests abroad. Hon. Oyrem further hailed the efforts H.E. Grace Akello Uganda's High Commissioner to India for successfully coordinating meetings with the aviation Authorities in India to secure Mumbai as Uganda Airlines latest destination. This was achieved amidst the COVID-19 restrictions with coordination efforts of the line Department at the Ministry represented by Ms. Anne Babinaga Acting Head of Regional Economic Cooperation and a member of the National Taskforce tasked to revitalise the National carrier.

Ambassador Arthur KAFEERO, the acting Permanent Secretary reiterated the readiness of the Ministry to help Women in Foreign Service attain their potential. 

Ms Hellen Kayiza-KASOZI, Minister Counselor and Accounting Officer, Uganda High Commission, Ottawa spoke on behalf of the Women in Foreign Service. She was grateful that the Ministry is doing its best to help Women achieve lifelong dreams. She presented the request for a child care facility at the Ministry as a means of increasing the productivity of working mothers.

The Luncheon which had over 200 Foreign Service Officers in attendance was transmitted as a live event via zoom and enabled Officers in Uganda Missions abroad to virtually participate in the celebrations.
