REPORT ON THE JOINT FIRST ALERTINE/ITURI MEETING SIGNED AND ADOPTED BY DRC AND UGANDAN OFFICIALS IN NEBBI

At the invitation of the Government of Uganda and further to the recommendation of the 8th, 9th and 10th Sessions of the Democratic Republic of Congo Republic of Uganda Joint Technical Commission respectively held in Bunia, Aru and Aru on 07-09 August 2015, the 9th, 26-28 April 2016 and 29th September-01st October 2016, a cross border meeting between delegates from the Ituri Province and the 10 districts of the Albertine Region in Uganda was held at Leosim Hotel in Nebbi District.

The Ituri Province was led by the Governor of Ituri Province, H.E Jefferson Abdallah Pene Mbaka and the Ugandan delegation was led by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Cooperation, Philemon Mateke. The meeting was facilitated the UNDP in a bid to foster harmonious relations at the common border area.

The bilateral engagement is geared towards streamlining and strengthening the relationship between the communities of Uganda and DRC to allow peace and security to thrive in the Albertine region which in turn shall result into development and prosperity for both parties.

The discourse that lasted three days drew up strategies to strengthen coordination mechanisms at District and Provincial levels which were geared providing top line growth for both countries.

The meeting agreed to resolve all disputes that had taken toll in the Alblertine and Ituri region and to establish focal points at various clusters of cooperation. They also resolved to have joint mechanisms to combat the tensions at the common border areas.

The bilateral meeting put in place strategies to have contact persons to verify and address the complaints raised by both communities through the corresponding sector contact persons to ease communication and correspondence across the border between the two countries.

The meeting climaxed with the signing of the Report of the Joint first Albertine/Ituri Meeting on the 19th November 2016 in Nebbi in the presence of Security, Immigration, Administrative, Trade and Social Affairs officials. This report is to be effected with immediate effect.
