Hon Sam Kutesa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Meets Amb. Amina Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Kenya

Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon Sam Kutesa received Amb. Amina Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary (Minister) for Foreign Affairs of Kenya in Uganda. Amb Amina was accompanied by Kenya's High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E. Geoffrey Okanga and other high ranking officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya. Permanent Secretary Amb. James Mugume and Amb. Alex Kyeyune head EAC &R accompanied Hon. Kutesa.

The two discussed the issue of border markings between Uganda and Kenya. Hon Kutesa explained that people who have been removing some markings had mistaken them to contain valuable minerals such as red mercury. The two agreed that the answer lies in sensitizing the communities living along those areas that these markings have no mercury or any valuable mineral content in them. The two Ministers agreed that the exercise of remarking all borders needs to be urgently finalized and also sensitization carried out.

The two also discussed the issue of traditional raids particularly between the Pokots of Kenya and the Karamajong of Uganda. They agreed that there is need to continue with joint border disarmament and the meeting was informed the team from Kenya would be in Uganda by 17th February 2014, to discuss and finalize on the issue.

The two Ministers agreed to set up a Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) between Kenya and Uganda. They set up 18th February 2014 as the signing date of the JPC, at the sidelines of the Northern Corridor Integration Projects Summit in Kampala.

The two Ministers reiterated their commitment to the Decision of the AU Summit of January 2014 in Addis-Ababa to deploy African Force in South Sudan as this would go a long way in helping stabilizing South Sudan as the parties there engage each other to finding a lasting solution to their current problems.
