Students of the Institute of Diplomatic Studies, from Cairo, Egypt Visit Uganda

The newly recruited diplomats in Egypt were received by the Minister of State for Works, Hon. Asuman Kiyingi, standing in for the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Kampala. The delegation was led by the Director of the Institute of Diplomatic Studies Dr. Walid M. Abdel Nasser. The Egyptian ambassador to Uganda Hon. Ahmed AbdelAziz Mustafa also attended. The purpose of the visit was to learn more about diplomacy in Uganda. They have also visited Kenya and Ethiopia.

In his welcome remarks, the Minister noted that Uganda and Egypt have enjoyed excellent historical diplomatic relations since the 1960s. He said that Uganda and Egypt are united by divine arrangement of the River Nile. He informed the delegation that Uganda and Egypt have had a number of exchanges of visits at the Presidential, Prime Minister and ministerial levels.

The Minister also appreciated the training cooperation the two countries have enjoyed especially in defense matters. He also underscored the scholarships and trainings that are extended to the Ugandan students in the various disciplines. The Minister emphasized cooperation both bilateral and at the African Union.  He also thanked the diplomats of choosing to visit Uganda and encouraged to use the opportunity to visit the source of the Nile.

Dr. Walid M. ABDEL NASSER, the Director of the Institute of Diplomatic Studies - Cairo underscored the importance of bilateral relations between Egypt and Uganda especially in the field of capacity building. He also stressed the importance of cultural cooperation and said it is cultural cooperation that encourages regionalism and regional cooperation. He pledged continued cultural cooperation between Uganda and Egypt. The ambassador pledged continued Egyptian support to development of water resources.

The diplomats received a presentation on the Nile Basin Initiative from the Head of Uganda Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs (UIDIA), DR. Sam Omara.
