Press Brief on Violence against Foreign Nationals Living In South Africa.

Thursday, 16th April 2015

Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs the general public that it is keenly following the ongoing situation in South Africa where foreign nationals especially those of African origin are being attacked.

Although the incidents are reported to have already led to a number of fatalities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its High Commission in Pretoria has confirmed that, none of these has so far involved any Ugandan apart from a reported case of a murder resulting from a robbery.

The Uganda High Commission, has advised Ugandans to exercise maximum caution by staying within the communities they reside, especially those living in Durban and Johannesburg as the most affected areas, and to keep in touch with the Mission as necessary.

The Chairpersons of Ugandan Associations have also been asked to register their members and forward lists to the High Commission in order to update its records on the numbers and locations of Ugandans in South Africa.

The Ministry has setup a multi-agency task force here at Head Quarters, to monitor the situation and advice government accordingly as it continues to liaise with the Ugandan High Commission in Pretoria.

We continue to work closely with our South African counterparts to get updates of the situation. So far, reports indicate that calm has returned to the most affected areas. The Government of Uganda welcomes the strong stand taken by President Zuma and the Government of South Africa against the acts of Xenophobia towards foreigners of African origin for whatever reason.
