President of the UN General Assembly H.E. Sam Kahamba Kutesa makes First Official Visit to China

On the occasion of his official visit to the People's Republic of China, H.E. Mr. Sam Kahamba Kutesa, President of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), was received in Beijing at Great Hall of the People by the country's Vice President, H.E. Mr. Li Yuanchao. Earlier during the same day, President Kutesa held a bilateral meeting with the Chinese Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Wang Yi. On 1st August, the PGA was received by H.E. Mr. Yang Jiechi, State Councilor.

During his separate meetings, the Chinese authorities mentioned above congratulated President Kutesa for his leadership during the 69th session.  President Kutesa and his hosts discussed the priorities of the 69th session of the General Assembly, such as the Post-2015 Development Agenda, the Third Conference on Financing for Development (FfD), the forthcoming twenty-first Conference of the Parties (COP21) on Climate Change in Paris, and the revitalization of the General Assembly and reform of the United Nations Security Council.

President Kutesa congratulated the People's Republic of China for the important role it has continued to play in supporting the work of the United Nations during the 69th session.  Exchanging views on a wide range of issues, the PGA and his Chinese hosts underlined the need to prioritize the implementation of a transformative development agenda with the main aim of eradicating poverty, improving livelihoods and achieve sustainable development. Discussions focused on areas such as reinforcing peace and security, infrastructure development, improvement of health, education, promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The President of the General Assembly commended the government of the People's Republic of China for its remarkable economic achievements. He thanked China for its commitment and contribution to international peace and security as well as its support for South-South cooperation, infrastructure development and industrialization – particularly for developing countries.

Taking stock of the recently concluded FfD Conference in Addis Ababa, President Kutesa and his interlocutors highlighted the importance of its outcome in the implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda that will be adopted by the Heads of State and Government during the General Assembly summit from 25 to 27 September 2015.  President Kutesa and his hosts concurred on the need for the family of nations to reinforce their efforts towards ending poverty, tackling inequalities, fostering sustainable economic growth, and combating climate change.

President Kutesa and his interlocutors also exchanged views on the significance of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. They discussed the upcoming commemorations and noted that the United Nations had accomplished a lot over the last 70 years and would continue to do so. They stressed the need to continue aligning the work of United Nations with emerging challenges and deliver better, reiterating that the United Nations remains an indispensable and unique organization that addresses global challenges.
