UGANDA'S MINING SECTOR INTRODUCED TO CHINESE INVESTORS

Friday, 21st April 2017

Today, 21st April 2017, an Investment Promotion Conference was held in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, to introduce Uganda's investment opportunities to potential Chinese investors. The Conference was held as part of ongoing activities by the Uganda Embassy in Beijing and the Consulate General in Guangzhou, to promote tourism, trade and investment opportunities in Uganda.

Held under the theme, "Uganda: Land of Investment Opportunities", the Conference brought together over ninety (90) companies. With a special focus on Uganda's mining industry and opportunities in the mining sector, emphasis was placed on need for companies that will add value, as Government no longer encourages export of unprocessed minerals.

Participants were also informed of the business environment in Uganda, as well as investment opportunities in other strategic sectors, including agriculture and agro-processing, energy and infrastructure development, and ICT.

While addressing participants, Uganda's outgoing Ambassador to China, Charles Wagidoso, and the Consul General in Guangzhou, Solomon Rutega, highlighted the excellent diplomatic relations existing between Uganda and China. They also commended the Chinese Government for the bilateral cooperation with Uganda, which has allowed many Chinese companies to work and invest in Uganda, especially on infrastructure and energy projects.

Mr. Lei Zhi Gang, Deputy Director of the Fujian Provincial Department of Commerce, represented the Fujian Provincial Government. While reiterating the good relations between Uganda and China, he commended ongoing efforts to introduce Uganda to Chinese businesses and potential investors. He undertook to work closely with the Missions in China to encourage Fujian investors to come to Uganda.

The Conference was also addressed by Mrs. Sheila Karungi Mugyenyi, Acting Director of Investment Promotion, Uganda Investment Authority; Mr. James Natukunda, Principal Geologist, Department of Mines and Survey, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development; and Mr. Wan Dong Sheng, Deputy General Manager, Wu Yi Co.
